Happy Holidays

by Bryan Baker

Released 2017
Released 2017
For those of us who are tired of the annual cries of "War on Christmas" when we simply try to cover our bases and accommodate multiple cultures.
NOTES
I've never understood the compulsion the right has to make all of us conform to their idea of what the holiday season is about. Talk about snowflakes!

The Castle & Other Songs About Murder

by Bryan Baker

Released 2017
Released 2017
A dark collection of songs about murder. Murder ballads to murder "ditties". Folk with a lush layer of strings, but also ranging to acoustic punk.
NOTES
This collection came about from a combination of new versions of murder ballads I'd done before, and new songs written explicitly with this project in mind. Two of the songs were originally recorded for a band called the Bravewell Fellows, made up of Bryan Baker, Ryan Morris and Kelly Howerton. "Pretty Polly" and "Fine Flowers in the Valley" were recorded with that band. When we broke up, I started pulling together this project, wrote several …

(I Want to Be Your) Hero

by Bryan Baker

Released 2017
Released 2017
If 80s Elvis Costello was a geek boy. If The Romantics were raised on Marvel & DC. A song about a super hero, or at least, someone who wants to feel like one when that special person looks at them. A "wish" song.
NOTES
Inspired by the theme of a local Science Fiction convention. Everyone wants to feel like a hero to someone special.

Yeah, I'm a Geek

Released 2012
Werewolves howling for lost love and regret, robots enslaving and destroying humanity, lost love returning in the zombiepocalypse, and that's just the first three songs! Geeky goodness.

Zombie Love Song (If Anyone Eats My Brains)

by Bryan Baker

Released 2010
Released 2010
Boy gets girl, boy loses girl in tragic car accident, boy gets girl back in Zombiepocalypse. A sweet love song about brains.
NOTES
I was driving near Sioux City, one summer morning, returning from picking my daughter up from camp. I somehow thought of the "hook" (If anyone eats my brains, I want it to be you). I recorded the phrase on my phone and put it away. It took about 6 months to weave a story around the concept.

"The second best audience participation song about zombies …

Mr. Lincoln

by Bryan Baker

Released 2009
Released 2009
As if Barenaked Ladies replaced Steven Page with Nick Cave and took up blues.
NOTES
Writing began for "Mr. Lincoln" in 2007, shortly after "Big Bad World" and "Roadhouse Ranch and Saloon" were released. The title track was written that summer, toward the end of the Bush era, and has been a staple in Mr. Baker's Live sets since that time. It's the most overtly political track on the album, but in a way that seems approachable by all who hunger for real leadership.

This album runs an emotional roller coaster …

Political and social commentary, with a wry sense of humor and a beat. Protest songs for a new war, if you voted red you may not like this album.
NOTES
"Love the organ/guitar/bass mix on this. really well produced! the vocal difference between the verse & chorus was a bit startling for me at first but grew on me by the end. lyrics are extremely well written & socially relevant in the great reggae tradition. well done!"
SteveC on MacJams, re "Bombs on the Underground"

"Smooth sound: Love the message, couldn't agree more.

Overall this has a nice smooth sound. It's got a "relaxed" feel …

Roadhouse Ranch and Saloon

by Bryan Baker

Released 2007
Released 2007
The honkey tonk meets the metaverse: "Roadhouse Ranch and Saloon" sprinkles ideas like cybersex, furries and pose balls right along with the sawdust, traditional and futuristic at the same time.
NOTES
Some things others have said about these songs:

"whiskey tinged vocal sounds just like one of my favorite local rocker's around town... sad love story well delivered... melancholic slide perfect for the song... neil young would have to drink some shots of whiskey to sound like you do here... musically quite neil youngish... bravo" McBoy on MacJams

"Really nice track... love the deep resonant vocals. The guitar work and female backing vox are also top …
